I posted this in the Tatting group on Facebook, but I'd be interested to know your viewpoints as well...
I'd love an opinion from you fine tatting people...
I'm finishing my latest full-sized version of the Spiderweb doily from "The Tatter's Treasure Chest" and trying to decide whether to add beads or not...
To jog your memory, here is the first full-sized version that I made late last year:
And what the ends look like without beads:Here is the mini-version I made, to which I added beads:
I like the beads, but I don't have beads in the center. Would it look weird to have beads on the outside but not in the inside, especially because the beads are so far away from the center?
So what do you think, to bead or not to bead, that is the question...
Thank you for your thoughts!
Beads! The beads look awesome. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I did go with beads, and I think it's nice...a little hard to iron, but nice! :)
DeleteBeads would give it weight and may lay better.
ReplyDeleteMargaret
It lays...ok with the beads. I need to wet it and block it before I love it :)
DeleteI like it with the beads on the outside row. It would be so useful to put over a jug or basin to keep flies off with the beads on the last round. Oooooh, you've given me ideas!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is a good idea. The small size I made and sent to Fox would be good over a glass, too...hmm... :)
DeleteI think the beads would be a lovely finish and draw the eye to the outer edge!
ReplyDeleteYes, I think they do add, now that they are there. Thanks for the opinion! :)
DeleteWell the purpose of a doily was to protect the fine wood furniture from getting scratched up, providing a pad between a vase or display item and the wood surface! If you are using this for that then I wouldn't put beads in the middle and you are living dangerously and bold having the beads on the edge any way. ha ha :) I like them on the edge and I would use it as a doily and set items on it. Now the bowl cover if fine. Have a fun day no matter how you decide on this life changing event! ha ha ha from Carollyn!
ReplyDeleteIt is funny to stress over beads or no beads, isn't it? :) Oh well, they are there now and I'M NOT REDOING IT!!! :)
DeleteI think the beads on the ends would be just fine. As Madtatter says, you wouldn't want them in the middle if you were to set something on it. I have a doily with beads in the middle, it is only good for display, not as a doily. It is pretty, but not very practical
ReplyDeleteGood point about the beads in the middle. I think the beads on the outside are quite nice, and I like having the things I tat be at least somewhat practical!
DeleteSure you can have beads on the outside without having them in the middle. I agree with Margaret that they'll add a bit of weight. And sparkle of course!
ReplyDeleteThanks! :) They are sparkly, that is nice :)
DeleteI believe to bead or not to bead is totally up to you, but I will say that either way looks good. I love the one I have!!!!!!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteWell, they are a pain to make, so you probably have the only one I'll do without beads, and I have the only one I'll do with beads :) Perfect! :)
DeleteIt's very interesting! I think the beads on the ends give some consistency: It is so light!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It is very light, and sometimes hard to get to lay quite right, but I will block it sometime and maybe it will lay just the way I want. :)
DeleteGreat job! I think beads on the edge. I like that version better, and it gives weight to the edge. I agree with everyone. Don't put them in the middle, because then you can't put anything on the doily.
ReplyDeleteThanks Grace! I did add the beads and they look pretty good, I like to think. The beads certainly won this round! :)
